SQUARE 101 Gallery 3309 Blake St. #101 Denver, Colorado
Shayna Cohn, a Colorado resident, recently graduated from The College of Wooster in Ohio where she created her thesis work as a participant of the compulsory Senior Independent Study Project.
"The Whimsy of A Wandering Whatsit has furthered my ongoing exploration of the relationship between line, color and the subconscious. Beginning with a single line either curving or static, I gradually built up networks of information upon that single strand. Without the presence of one line, another would not exist, for they are completely dependent on each other. This is a relationship contingent upon the energy and temperament of each component; therefore, what I draw is based entirely on what I have drawn before. These paintings are visual representations of my state of mind and the roundabout path that brought me to that moment of physical conception. No matter how large, the paintings are only fractions of the all-encompassing drawing, which can never be completely contained by a section of paper or canvas. My pieces are simply portions of that continual piece that exists in between and beyond each work, extending indefinitely across all surfaces and planes and in each possible direction. The summation of my pieces collectively represents an uncovering of this underlying linear construction, which serves as both my inspiration for my work, and furthermore, my interpretation of reality. Please enjoy!" - Shayna Cohn
